Adult Dance and Christmas Party
A number of years ago, several of our "campers" were passing the 21 year maximum age to attend our summer camp. We had traditionally funneled our resources to causes that related to children with disabilities. However, we did not want to loose contact with our "kids" just because they were entering adulthood.
So we began to offer Adults with Disabilities Dances in conjunction with the summer camps and the children's Christmas event. Attendance to these events is restricted to those clients over 21 years of age. In the summer there is a DJ, bingo and pizza. In December there is also a DJ and pizza and Santa makes a visit. Everyone attending makes sure they get their picture with Santa.
These events have expanded to include residents of many of the group homes in the Danville area. Almost all the people attending the adult events have some degree of mental disability. When we asked the counselors what we could provide as a Christmas gift to the people attending the dance they suggested a gift certificate to a local fast food establishment so they could have another field trip.
